Above the Lake: A Day at Carlton Hotel St. Moritz

Perched above Lake St. Moritz in the Engadin Valley, the Carlton Hotel occupies one of the most commanding positions in the Swiss Alps.

From its elevated setting, every suite faces south toward the lake and surrounding peaks, capturing the light and openness that define this part of Switzerland. With just around 60 suites, the hotel remains one of the most intimate five-star stays in St. Moritz, offering a level of privacy that contrasts with the scale of many of the resort’s grand hotels .

Originally opened in 1913, the Carlton blends this heritage with contemporary design, creating a setting that feels both classic and current.

The day begins with a short transfer to the slopes.

From the hotel, access to the Corviglia ski area is quick and seamless, opening up one of Switzerland’s most expansive and sun-drenched ski regions. Our team typically recommends starting high, where long, immaculately groomed runs stretch across the mountain, with views back over the frozen lake.

This is skiing that favours freedom and flow. Wide pistes, consistent snow and a sense of space that encourages you to slow down and take in the landscape.

By midday, the focus shifts naturally to dining.

On the mountain, traditional Engadin restaurants offer a relaxed setting, but back at the hotel, the experience becomes more elevated. The two-Michelin-starred Da Vittorio – St. Moritz remains one of the defining dining experiences in the resort, pairing Italian culinary precision with an alpine setting. Recently redesigned for the new season, the space now reflects a more contemporary interpretation of the restaurant’s long-standing reputation .

For something more regionally focused, the Grand Restaurant draws on local ingredients and seasonal flavours, with views across the valley adding to the experience.

Afternoons at the Carlton often extend beyond skiing.

St. Moritz is as much about culture and atmosphere as it is about the mountain. A walk along Via Serlas, one of Europe’s most exclusive shopping streets, or time spent around the lake during events such as White Turf or the ICE vintage car showcase, adds another dimension to the day .

Back at the hotel, experiences become more personalised.

Through its “Moving Mountains” programme, the Carlton offers curated activities ranging from guided winter walks and forest bathing to more adventurous moments such as ice swimming or private mountain experiences led by the hotel’s outdoor butler team .

As the light fades, the hotel comes into its own.

Afternoon tea is served on the Bel Etage, beside a fireplace that anchors the space, before the evening moves toward dinner and drinks. One of the more distinctive experiences is the hotel’s fondue gondolas, set overlooking the lake, offering a uniquely St. Moritz way to end the day under the stars .

For the 2026/27 season, the Carlton continues to reinforce its position at the top end of the Swiss alpine market.

Recent recognition includes being awarded the highest Michelin Key distinction, placing it among a select group of standout hotels in Switzerland, alongside continued investment in dining and guest experience .
